Strato/Composite Volcano

.

Definition: A stratovolcano, also called a composite volcano, is a tall, conical volcano composed of many layers of hardened lava, tephra, and volcanic ash

Additional Information: These volcanoes are characterized by a steep profile and periodic, explosive eruptions. The lava that flows from them is viscous, and cools and hardens before spreading very far. The source magma of this rock is classified as acidic, having high to intermediate levels of silica (as in rhyolite, dacite, or andesite)

Relation to Class Labs: This term applies to our class lab on erosion, deposition, and mapping the surface of a planet, because volcanos can be used to tell information about a planet's core and inner surface. A volcano's location can tell if a riverbed was made from water (like a river or stream) or a previous lava flow.
