wiki Word: PLANET |
Definition: In the traditional model of solar systems, a celestial body larger than an asteroid or comet, illuminated by light from a star, such as the sun, around which it revolves.A celestial body that orbits the sun, has sufficient mass to assume nearly a round shape, clears out dust and debris from the neighborhood around its orbit, and is not a satellite of another planet. There is only 8 planets in our solar syem but we have about 3 planets that our dwarf planets. There may also be hundreds of undiscovered worlds in outer parts of our Solar System, astronomers believe. One of these planets is named Eris. This new dwarf planet is the largest object found in orbit around the sun since the discovery of Neptune and its moon Triton in 1846. It is larger than Pluto, discovered in 1930. Like Pluto, the new dwarf planet is a member of the Kuiper belt, a swarm of icy bodies beyond Neptune in orbit around the sun. Until this discovery Pluto was frequently described as "the largest Kuiper belt object" in addition to being a dwarf planet. Pluto is now the second largest Kuiper belt object, while this is the largest currently known.Three small bodies have been found in orbit around the pulsar PSR 1257+12. They have been designated "PSR1257+12 A, ..B, and ..C". One is about the size of the moon, the other two are about 2 to 3 times the mass of Earth. They were discovered by measuring variations in the pulsation speed of the pulsar which can be interpreted as gravitational effects of three small planets. The original observation has been confirmed but, of course, no direct images have been made -- that is way beyond the capabilities of our best telescopes. These planets are believed to have formed after the supernova that produced the pulsar. The present planets would have originally been within the envelope of the progenitor star and therefore wouldn't have stood much chance of surviving the supernova explosion, and wouldn't have remained in circular orbits after the explosion.

We are learninng about all the stuff in the solar system and and planets play a big role. We live on a planet which might be the only planet to hold life. |
