wiki Word: Periodic Table |
Definition: The Periodic Table displays the chemical elements according to their properties. |
|
The Facts: The periodic table is an arrangement of the chemical elements ordered by atomic number in groups and periods. Periods are the horizontal rows that are numbered 1-7. Groups are the vertical columns and are numbered 1-18. They include Group 1 (alkali metals), Group 2 (alkaline earth metals), Group 15 (pnictogens, or pnicogens), Group 16 (chalcogens), Group 17 (halogens) and Group 18 (noble gases). The inner transition metals (or the lanthanoids and actinoids), are set apart from the table, but are still included in groups 6 and 7. This is done so that the table isn't too wide. |

SO WHAT? We are studying this term, to help us further understand the elements. The periodic table is a critical concept because it is commmenly used when referring to the elements. When decribing elements and the many similarities, we look to the periodic table. Elements that are in the same group generally bond similarly because they have the same number of valence electrons. An element's atomic number and atomic mass increase by period. It's location on the periodic table can be determined by it's electron configuration. We studied the periodic table and elements in class. One important part of learning about the element we were assigned, was to be able to identify it's location on the periodic table. The periodic table helps to show the relationship between the properties of elements, which are a part of our everyday life. We are constantly surrounded by them, and understanding the periodic table will help to understand elements, and in turn help us understand matter. |
