Mixture |
A mixture is a combination of 2 or more substances that are not chemically combined.

A mixture can usually be separated into the pure substances it is made of. Mixtures are divided into two categories based on how well the substances are mixed. A homogeneous mixture is the same throughout. For example, apple juice is a homogeneous mixture because every particle contains the same combination of water, sugars, and acids. Salt water is another example of a homogenous mixture because the ratio of salt to water is about the same everywhere. A heterogeneous mixture is not completely mixed. A pizza, for example, is a heterogeneous mixture because there is not the same amount of cheese, sauce, and dough on every slice. Salad dressing is another example of a heterogenous mixture because the oil, water, and other contents do not mix uniformly.

Many substances that we deal with, in science and in our everyday lives, are mixtures. The ice cream that you have for dessert is a mixture, as well as the nacho cheese dip that we had for our free day in class. In order to better understand the world around us, we must understand how different mixtures work and interact with one another.
