wiki Word: Metal

Definition: An element that easily loses electrons to form positive ions, and has metallic bonds between atoms.

  • Metal comes from the Greek word "Metallon."

  • Metals form ionic bonds with nonmetals.

  • Metals are very good conductors of electricity. They are lustrous, ductile and malleable.

  • Metals that are on the Periodic Table of Elements: Lithium, Sodium, Potassium, Rubidium, Caesium, Francium, Beryllium, Magnesium,  Calcium, Strontium, Barium, Radium, Aluminum, Gallium, Indium, Thallium, Tin, Lead, Bismuth, Ununtrium, Ununquadium, Ununpentium, Ununhexium.

  • There is 4 groups of metals in the periodic table: Alkali Metals, Alkaline Earth Metals, Transition Metals, and Other Metals.

  • Most metals are chemically reactive and bond with oxygen to form oxides. Alkali metals are most reactive, next the alkaline earth are the second most reactive.

Knowing about metals is very inmportant. We see and use metals every single day. Metal is used to build cars. And also to build equipment to build your house. If we didn't have metals we would still be using rocks as hands tools to cut and make things. Also there are many metals in the periodic table of elements. The groups of metals in the periodic table of elements are Alkali metals, alkali earth metals, and metalloids. We should know which metals are reactive and which aren't. Metal is also a very good conductor of energy. So we all know not to put something metal into an electrical socket.
