Definition: Melting Point is the temperature at which a soid is converted into a liquid.
|
Melting Point is the temperature at which a solid is converted into a liquid. Melting Point occurs when a solid substance gains energy and its particles gain kinetic energy. The particles hit each other and bounce farther away, causing the solid to expand and become a liquid. All matter has a melting point but they have varios ranges depending on what the substance is. The highest melting point is 4488 K(tantalum hafnium carbide). It is a physical property. One example is that the melting point of Zinc is 419.58 C. |

SO WHAT? We are studing this word in science because it is an important physical property of matter and it helps to describe the elements, which we are studing right now. Without melting point a solid could not become a liquid and that would mess up the phases of matter. We need to understand this term to know at what temperature something melts.
