wiki Word: Kinetic Friction

Definition: opposing force that applies to an object moving across another

When two objects are touching, there is friction. Friction is an force that acts on an object that is touching another. Kinetic comes from the Latin word kinetikos, meaning motion.

Have you ever had trouble pushing something (such as a heavy box) across a floor?

Kinetic friction caues things to be  hard to move because it is an opposing force.

There is more than one type of kinetic friction. Some examples are:

  • Sliding friction
  • Rolling friction

Skiing causes kinetic friction.

We used rolling friction-a type of kinetic friction- in our air rocket car lab. This was because the amount of force needed to overcome rolling friction was less than the amount needed to overcome sliding friction. This allowed our cars to go for a farther distance and give us better results.
