Halogens

 

 

 Halogens are a series of nonmetal elements in group 17 of the periodic table.

 

 

Facts:

 

  • They are very reactive nonmetals.
  • They have 7 electrons in their outermost valence shell.
  • If a halogen and a metal reacts a salt is formed.
  • Flourine, Chlorine, Bromine, Iodine, and Astatine are all halogens.

So What???:

 

We are studying this term because it is an essential part of the periodic table. If you do not know what

halogens are than you will not understand an entire group of the periodic table. Halogens make up 5

elements and without them there wouldn't be such thing as a salt. Most halogens form reactions with

other elements to make salt. Chlorine (a halogen) and sodium form table salt which has many uses in

the world.
