And the wiki Word is......... Escape Velocity

Definition: the speed in which the kenitic energy of an object is equal to it magnitude of it's gravitational potential energy.

The escape velocity for earth is 11.2 kilometers/sec.Escape velocity can be described as the speed needed to "break free" from a gravitational field. The term escape

velocity can be considered a misnomer because it is actually a speed rather than a velocity.

Isaac Newton's analysis of escape velocity. Projectiles A and B fall back to earth. Projectiles C and D achieve an orbit at a fixed height. Projectile E achieves escape velocity.                          Filename: j0297001.gif

This applies to what we are learning in class because we were studing rockets and we have to know the precise speed in which to get rockets to if we ever want them to get into orbit.
