How does this term apply to any of our class labs?

 We are studing Mars and searching for life on Mars and in order for there to be life than we must look for signs of water.Since it is not known of the existance of liquid water then we have to search for some signs of the water's flow.Erosion, wich is the process of washing away, can be   

formed by wind and water.So we use signs of water erosion here on Earth and compare them to what  seems like water erosion on Mars.
