Ellipse or elliptical are aslo used in mathamatics. Was first studied by Menaecchmus and given its present name by Apolloius. The two fixed points are called foci (plural of focus). Johannes Kepler explained that the orbits along which the planets travel around the sun are ellipses in his first Law of Planetary Motion. Later explained by Sir Isaac Newton as a corollary of his Law of Universal Gravitation. An ellipse can be streched along an axis, in or out of the plane of an ellipse, and it will still be an ellipse. Also in 1705 Halley showed that the comet, which was later named after him, moved in an elliptical orbit around the sun.
