Definition: a large-scale solar event involving an ejection of hot plasma that may accelerate charged particles and travel as far as the Earth's orbit, preceded by a shock front that may create a magnetic storm on Earth. It also effects solar winds and satelites.

Coronal mass ejections are explosions in the sun that throw out massive amounts of charged particles, some times as much as 1000000000000 killograms! These particles (known as coronal mass ejections) can be carried in the solar wind and casue major havoc in our solar system. You would think scienist would have discorvered these early on, but in reality they weren't discovered until the 1970's and even now they are hard to detect. Coronal mass ejections will become more and more frequent as our sun nears solar maxium, a time where sunspots are occuring the most frequently. ( Our sun goes through 11 year cycles.) These mass ejections can cause some major problems for earth.

This is important to know because if a cme hit earths magnetic feild the wrong it will knock out electricity! When the electricity goes out we might be able to get it up and running for up to 2 years!...and without electricity for two years our sewage and waste systems with merge with our drinking water and it will be contaminated. Also hospitals and other emergecy services will be without electricity. So overall a CME wouldnt be a good thing for society.
