wiki Word: compound |
Definition: Compounds are groups of two or more elements that are bonded together.
The Facts: Compounds form through chemical bonding, and consist of 2 or more pure elements. There are two types of bonds that hold the atoms together; ionic and covalent bonds. Ionic compounds form by the attraction between two oppositely charged ions. Covalent compounds form when the atoms "share" pairs of electrons. For example: H2O is held together by polar covalent bonds. |

Water (H20) and Sodium Chloride (NaCl), or table salt, are examples of compounds.
Sodium Chloride is also an example of an ionic compound.

SO WHAT? We are studing the term compound, so that we can fully understand about elements. Compounds are a critical concept that we must know about, because we are surrounded by compounds everyday. When elements combine chemically, we must be able to identify that a compound has been formed. In order to be sucessful in science, we must not only know what a compound is, but also understand about the 2 different kinds compounds. We couldn't live without compounds, literally. One of the most important sources in our life, water, is a compound. We studied elements and the periodic table in class. One of the most important parts of our project was to be able to identify some of the most common compounds that our element forms. |
