wiki Word: Colloid |
| PRONOUNCIATION KEY: call-oy-d |
Definition: A system of fine particles that are dispersed in a continuous fashion that prevents them from settling on the bottom of the substance. |
Colloids are just a way scienstists classify substances, "A colloid is a type of mechanical mixture where one substance is dispersed evenly throughout another."-wiki source. That means that there are at least two substances mixed with each other and often are not seen apart (the substances) while together. Because of this dispersal, some colloids have the appearance of solutions. besides this, colloids are easy to recognize. A cool lync-word: call -noid!
The dispersed-phase particles have at least one dimension which is between one nanometre and one micrometre. Such particles are normally invisible to a normal microscope, though their presence can be confirmed with the use of an ultramicroscope or an electron microscope. homogenus mixtures with a dispersed phase in this size range may be called colloidal aerosols, colloidal emulsions, colloidal foams, colloidal dispersions, or hydrosols. The dispersed- phase particles or droplets are largely affected by the surface chemistry present in the colloid.

The classification of a substance under the name colloid is a nessecery, documentation of a substances properties for scientists conducting experimentation, research, hypothesising or recording. for example: somone discovered a stronger hair gel. they would record the name they call it, its elemental properties, and its form. the gel would go under colloid and could be found easily if needed for reference, that is why colloid and the classification of substances is required. |
