wiki Word: chromosphere |
| PRONOUNCIATION KEY: kro-mo-sfeer |
Definition: chromosphere literally means "color sphere" it is a thin layer of the sun's atmosphere just above the photosphere, about 10,000 kilometers deep. |
|
The name chromosphere comes from the fact that it has a reddish color. The color can be seen with a naked eye only during a full solar eclipse. The temperature is hotter than the photosphere. One theory is that sonic turbulance is the reason for this higher temperature.

here's what it looks like during an eclipse (the only time the naked eye can see it):
WARNING: DO NOT UNDER ANY SURCUMSTANCES GO HOME AND TRY TO LOOK INTO THE SUN DURING AN ECLIPSE OR ANY TIME OF THE DAY!!!! IT WILL DAMAGE YOUR EYES PERMANENTLY!!!

SO WHAT??? SECTION: without this, we wouldn't have much light and the sun would've probably burned out, thus creating a supermassive blackhole and sucking in everything in the galaxy...scary huh?!? Without studying this word, we would not know as much about the solar system as we do today. We also wouldn't know what layer of the sun we were looking at during an eclipse. We also wouldn't know that it was dangerous to look into the sun because it burns through the layers in your eyes. OUCH!!!! |
