Definition- The line about which a rotating body, such as the earth, turns.
All planets have an axis. Our Earth is tiled on it axis. The axis on our earth goes straight through the center from the North pole to the South pole. Axis can be tilted like ours is, but they are always a steraight line through the center of a rotating abject.
Another example of an axis is on a car. The axis of a car it what it between the two wheels. Most cars only have 2 axis. The wheels are the rotating abjects in this example and the pole between them is the axis.
A top also has an axis. There is the top part then the stick that sticks through it and out so you can spin the top. the top spins on that. Its axis.
The rotatin gof Earth on its axis is also like a figure skater as he spins.
Earth is tilted on its axis a t 23.5 degrees. This tilt causes the number of daylight hours to change as the time of year changes. The Axis is always tilted towards the north star, the polaris.
Because Earth is tilted on its axis its northern hemisphere is tilted towards the sun during the summer.
If it wasn't for earth being tilten on its axis, day and night would have equal lengths.
We need to study and understand what an axis is because many things rotate on them. Our planets all have an axis which they rotate on. If we didnt know what an axis was we wouldn't know alot about our outerspace. Cars depend on an axis to hold the wheels together also they they can move. Without the knowldge of an axis we wouldn't have cars. Our world woud be completly different if we didn't ever study axis.Knowing what an axis is is important to us beacuse it relates to many things in our universe. Planets, toys, cars... and many more things. With us knowing about an axis it will help us in class. We will understand better about the motion of the planets in our solar system.
