wiki Word: Alkali-earth metal

Definition: Very reactive elements in group 2 of the periodic table.

Alkali-earth metals, also known to some as alkaline-earth metals, include beryllium,

magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium, and radium. They are soft, silvery-colored metals.

All of the elements in the alkali-earth metal group share most of the sme properties.

All of the alkali-earth metals have 2 valence (vay-lince) electrons, or electrons in

their outer shells. When they bond, they lose these two electrons, to have a charge

of 2+. They easily react with elements in groups 16, which have 6 valence

electrons. Alkali-earth metals react violently with water, though not as violently as alkali metals.

Alkali- earth metals are important to everyday life. Calcium is one of the main

things that keeps us strong and helps build our bones and teeth. Other alkali-earth

metals are found in compounds that are found in many places. Alkali-earth metals

are the second group of the periodic table of the elements. Right now in Mrs. Flynt's

class we are studying the periodic table. Knowing about alkali-earth metals helps us to

fully understand the periodic table.
