Definition: Alkali Metals are the elements found in group one of the periodic table. |
Alkali metals are the elements found in group one of the periodic table of elements. They include Lithium, Sodium, Potassium, Rubidium, Caesium, and Francium. Although Hydrogen appears above these elements, it is not in gruop one. Since the alkali metals are all in the same group, they share alot of properties. Those properties include, having a silver color, being shiny, having low densities, being very reactive, and having one electron in their outer most valance shell. Since they have one valance electron they bond easily with other atoms. Alkali metals are so reactive that they are stored in oil, so they do not react with oxygen. |

SO WHAT??? We are studying alkali metals to understand the elements more in depht, and how and why the periodic table is classified the way that it is, and the properties of the periodic table that classify it this way. We would need to know this term because we need to be able to identify an element and know where it would be places in the periodic table. Alkali metals would apply by being able to group the elements on the periodic table. |
