We use his Laws of stratigraphy when we use the Mar's packet. The Law of Cross-Cutting Relations helps us with an aerial view. The Law of Superposition tells us which layer is younger or older. The Law of Original Horozontality tells us if the bed of rock is at an angle then we know that something happened to it.
