Definition: In 1961, President Kennedy announced a mission of sending a man to the moon. Six of the missions actually landed on the moon. |

Just three weeks after America put a man in space, President Kennedy declared that we would send a man to the moon. The race was on. The first attempt was Apollo 1 and that was tragic because it never even got off the launch pad. A fire started during a test and three astronauts were killed. But this just inspired NASA to work harder. On July 20, 1969, after 8 years of hard work, Apollo 11 landed on the moon and Neil Armstrong took a walk on the moon and the hard work had paid off. Actually six missions landed on the moon and studied all different things about it, like the surface, weather and rocks.

SO WHAT??? SECTION: The Apollo missions were "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind". They got people excited about space exploration. People felt that we might find life on other planets and find a new frontier. After we made it to the moon, it was like we could go anywhere. If we went to the moon then why not Mars? We have been studying Mars and this will be the first time people have set foot on another planet if we get there so if weve been to the moon we should be able to go to mars.
